For this reason, statistically a person will not buy from your website on their first visit, in fact it is usually as far as the seventh visit before a prospective customer will in fact purchase from your site.  So what is their incentive to return to your website?  Static content, i.e., content that never changes becomes stale very fast.  We must add to their experience with every site visit.

Search Engines like blogs.  They like new, high value content as this allows them yield higher quality search results to their users.  Remember, the search engines are doing business too.  It is not in their interest to return stale, out dated information to searchers.
Inactive websites, such as brochure style sites lose out BIG TIME in the ranking of search engines.  So it doesn’t really matter if you are offering the best service in the world, if your site is static and inactive then there is a very real risk that it will not be ranked by the search engines and potential customers/clients may never find you.

It is also interesting to note that people rarely go beyond the first page of results returned by the search engines, so if you’re not on page one you have lost!

Blogging is a very good method of achieving better search ranking, depending of course on how it has been optimised.
